Local firm, Environmental Defence Systems Ltd have been presented with their Green Hero Award 2008 Wall Shied in recognition for their environmental project - FloodSax®. The Shields are awarded annually in recognition of companies, councils and communities carrying out projects that enhance the environment. The judges commented: “Flood defence is a big issue. The recent events in this country have made millions more people aware of the risks that can affect so many of us, yet for many councils, the first line of defence is a sandbag. These are bulky, wasteful, unreliable, hard to store & transport and have short lifespan. FloodSax® overcome all these concerns and most importantly, they are biodegradable.”FloodSax® are a clean and easy to store alternative to sandbags.

In previous year, EDS won the National Gold Winner for Products in the Green Apple Environment Awards. The Green Apple Awards campaign is run by the Green Organisation, an independent, non-political, non-profit organisation that recognises rewards and promotes environmental best practice around the world. Their supporters include the Environment Agency, the Chartered Institution of Wastes Management, the Charted Institute of Environmental health and various other professional bodies. Receiving the Green Hero Award provides a further accolade to EDs’s environmental achievements.
