FloodSax®, an innovative self-energised flood defence system, has been officially endorsed by the National Disabled Fire Association (NDFA).

Firefighters have witnessed firsthand the devastation caused during severe weather conditions. The severity of flooding is increased for the elderly and the disabled due to the fact they are unable to help themselves by constructing their own lines of defence. Traditional sand bags are difficult to assemble as well as being heavy and cumbersome to handle. In many situations the flood waters have already entered properties before the appropriate defences can be made available by local authorities.

20 FloodSax® FloodSax® provide a lightweight and easy to activate alternative to the more traditional flood defence systems. At just 0.2 kg in weight they can be easily placed in position by the elderly and disabled alike, which enables them to be self sufficient, plan ahead and be preparedwhen flood waters threaten. FloodSax® use water to expand and absorb water to 90% capacity in just 3 minutes. The threatening flood waters can even be used as the actuator. FloodSax® are easy to store. 20 FloodSax® can be stored in a box for up to 5 years and can be deployed in minutes.

Duncan White, Chair of the NDFA said, “Having seen the FloodSax® flood defence system in operation and witnessed the versatility and simplicity of their operation I was able to fully support the feelings of the NDFA in endorsing FloodSax® as a product designed with disabled people and the elderly very much in mind. This lightweight and compact system will ensure that the most vulnerable members of our communities will be better prepared in the event of a threat from flooding.”

Richard Bailey of Environment Defence Systems, is the inventor of the pioneering FloodSax®. Asked about his innovative product, Richard commented, “We are delighted that FloodSax® have been given the seal of approval by the NDFA. We have always been a very forward-thinking company and wanted to give some control back to the people in flood risked areas with FloodSax®. FloodSax® are designed to control flood damage and will buy the time you need to move your loved ones and valuable possessions to safety.”

Note: NDFA aims to promote disability in the Fire & Rescue Services and the wider communities in which they serve. Through partnerships with companies such as Environmental Defence Systems Ltd (manufacturers of the FloodSax®®) the NDFA will continue to raise the awareness of disability in the Fire and Rescue Services and the wider community.
